About

WWII RAF Group - Keeping the Spirit Alive!

A living history group dedicated to preserving the memory of those airmen and women who served this country in its hour of need, especially to the thousands who made the ultimate sacrifice

Who Are We?

The Group was created in 2009 the focus being to rejuvenate an old display that had fallen into dis-use in time for the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. The only part of that display remaining now is the Operations Room desk so by the time of our first displays in 2010 we had dug deep into our own pockets and worked hard to create the set we then rolled out.

We are not all ex-RAF, though one or two are and others have past conections of one sort or another but the main thing that binds us is an interest in doing what we do.

Group displays are supplemented by individual members collections of equipment, for instance we have people with access to period flying gear, escape, survival, navigation, and other equipment.

The ChainHome display was created by just two of our ladies with a particular interest in that area, and a great job of it they have done too! Whilst we do have history enthusiasts in the Group, we also have people who turn out because they just like to be a part of the display.

Why not join us?

WE GET MORE REQUESTS FOR DISPLAYS EVERY YEAR THAN WE CAN COMMIT TO. IF WE HAD MORE PEOPLE WE COULD DO SO MUCH MORE AND RELEASE EXISTING GROUP MEMBERS TO DEVELOP OTHER THINGS, SO WE ARE ALWAYS ON THE LOOKOUT FOR LIKE MINDED PEOPLE.

The cost of membership is relatively small (£5 membership of Worcester Re-Enactors is all we require). Getting the uniform somewhere near being right will cost rather more than that so its best to look at the guidance we offer and ask questions before leaping in. We really need a range of portrayals so we do ask people to try and put something together that is suitable for what they want to do. When we started we had 2 or 3 Wing Co's and that didn't look right at all. Whilst other Groups may chose to operate differently, for us the uniform is simply a portrayal. The people who run this Group do not do so by rank displayed, so you could wear an OR uniform and still be Chairman, though obviously when on display we need to keep in character. We are also democratic. Everyone has an equal say, though the last word will be with the Chair.

We organise social events for our members and others, an annual 40s dance for instance and we have undertaken trips to Uxbridge Ops Room Bunker and the new HQ Fighter Command museum.

Drop us a line or come and talk to one of the Committee members at a display.
